Weighed on Tropic Queen

Blue Marlin Oregon Inlet, North Carolina

We were 39 miles southeast of the inlet at a spot called 'The Point.' We hooked the fish on a double-hooked mullet at 10:30 in the morning and landed it in 2 hours, 46 minutes. It jumped more times than we could count. We had it on 100-pound-test line with a 9/0 Penn reel. The captain did a heck of a job with the boat. But we had to get some folks off a nearby boat, the Dutchess of Dare, to help us get it into the Jo-Boy. Took seven of us all together. The scales couldn't weigh it at the (Oregon Inlet) Fishing Center, so we loaded it into a truck and took it to the Hatteras Marlin Club.

The 36-foot Uniflite, KEALIA, under Capt. Mike Harlan’s direction was on the world-famous Kona "Grounds" pulling a spread of lures containing a Joe Yee Super Plunger that a lurking grander couldn't resist. Pat Smith and Andrea Stamiforth rotated the angling duties for the next hour. The captain was 22 years old and this fish capped off a seven-trip run where a marlin was caught on each trip.

Blue Marlin Kona, Hawaii

Capt. Peter Hoogs and crewman Rob McGuckin put their skills to the ultimate test as their anglers, Ray Bayner and Paul Chiakas, tag-teamed on this huge marlin. The fight lasted 41/2 hours and the fish would have been a world record because they caught it while using 80-lb test line. In fact, it was 227 pounds larger than the world record at the time.
