Capt. Craig “Sparra” Denham on Black Label caught a 1,200 lbs. Black Marlin. They were fishing between the No. 9 & No. 10 Ribbon Reef when this big girl struck. Crew member Tara Thompson-Disnard captured these images. This is the 25th Grander of the Year on the Great Barrier Reef reported to us this season.

This seems to happen every year now. We used to call it being hit by lightning twice, but the Viking II would no longer be floating. Capt. Billy Billson on Viking II, followed up with his 2nd Grander of the year, this one being called closer to 1,200 lbs.

Capt. Corey Hard & Jimbo Bladin on Askari caught this massive Black Marlin, they called 1,200+ lbs. They were fishing on Opal Ridge when this beauty took the bait for Angler Steve Swachby. They did try to take her as she was a trophy fish, but she managed to straighten two gaffs and broke free from two more. What a BEAST!

Moana III while fishing on the Opal Ridge, successfully tagged and released this magnificent 1,200 lbs. Black Marlin. Capt. Daniel McCarthy tell us that the fish was fought for just 15-Minutes by Kiwi angler Douglas Perry. Turns out Mr. Perry is VERY lucky as this was his first marlin!

Our 28th Grander of the Year comes to us, yet again from Capt. Dan McCarthy on Moana III. A two hour and forty five minute fight into the night, resulted in a 1,200+ Black Marlin. Fish was caught on Spur Reef

Capt. Brett Alty on Mistress released a black marlin he called 1,200 and one of the largest he has seen on the reef. The fish was on for just under 3 Hours, fishing 75 lbs. of drag. She came to the wire four times, but did not jump much, so this was the best picture that was captured. She was so un-impressed with the drag pressure, that she headed over to tuna school and tried to feed.

Leonard Huddy was fishing on the CHRISTINA H when he hooked his behemoth marlin on a Shimano 130 reel loaded with 150-lb test line. The fish's weight was calculated by measurements and was the second grander for Waianae in 2001.
