Capt. Robert Englehard found the third grander for Kona in 1985 when his 43-foot Merritt, the NO PROBLEM, ran over this 1168-pounder and Scott Preece hit the fighting chair.
Capt. Bobby Brown of the KONA SEAFARI broke a long waiting spell when he hauled his 1170-lb blue marlin into the harbor. The previous capture of a marlin weighing over 1,000 lbs had been in June of 1972 on the island of Oahu. Kona's last grander had been caught in May of 1967--seven years earlier.
Capt. Terry Dahl of the GRAND SLAM, a 46-foot Hatteras, raised this 1171-lb blue marlin for anglers Ron Walker and Walt Mahoney Jr. It was the first charter-caught grander in 1988.
