Capt. Billy Billson and Andy Dow on Viking II weighed a 1,117 lbs. Black Marlin. This is the 1st Grander of the 2017 season and had a 135” Short, 78” Girth and a 22” Tail measurement
At the time of this catch, this marlin was 17 lbs larger than the existing world record but angler Rik Jones fought the fish from the rod holder and thus disqualified it from world record competition. It took Rik and Capt. Randy Holden of the 19-foot skiff, AILINA, an hour to bring this fish to gaff. It had struck a lure and was angled on 130-lb test line.
Capt. Jeff Kahl was three miles from NASA-buoy near the island of Lanai when he raised their big blue on an Elkins blue-back Popsicle lure. The lure was rigged to a 130-class Penn International loaded with 130-lb test Ande line. The marlin fought Reese Randall and the crew on the REEL HOOKER, a 35-foot Bertram, for 1 hour and 50 minutes before giving up the ghost.
Captain Lukas Folk and Patrick Murphy on Habitat weighed a Blue Marlin (1,119 lbs.) The fish had a 141” Short, 78″ Girth and a 21” Tail. This was Capt. Folk’s 3rd Grander
