Capt. McGrew Rice was outside of Kahaluu on the Big Island (Kona side) in 1,000 fathoms of water when a 1058-lb blue marlin attacked a green Eric Koya "Poi Dog" lure with red eyes and a blue vinyl skirt on the short corner. Kai Rizzuto, age 16, manhandled the monster marlin and it was boatside in a half hour's time. The crew was unable to revive the marlin and the IHU NUI returned to port with its third 1,000-plus-lb blue marlin. Kai's grandfather, Jim Rizzuto, is a well-known author of many fishing books and magazine articles. Jim was also aboard the IHU NUI and photographed his grandson in action.

Capt. Jay Rifkin raised this massive blue marlin while trolling a purple Softhead lure outside of Manele Bay, Lanai in 200 fathoms of water. Mike and Kendall Michaelis took turns battling the fish during the three-hour battle from the JUN KEN PO. Co-capt. Chris Cole was ready with the gaffs when the 1058.3-lb behemoth neared the 42-foot Bertram. This marlin is the largest caught in Maui County since 2007.

After being hooked on a live bait (aku) towed from Capt. Peter Hoogs' PAMELA, this fish pulled them into the Alenuihaha Channel then dove deep and died. They planed the fish up in the dark and boated it at 11:40 p.m. The fight time was 101/2 hours and this was Kona s fourth grander of 1985.
