Capt. Moses Bautista had entered his 19-foot skiff, the IWA LANI, in the Wee Guys Tournament on this day. They hooked the marlin and boated it 21/2 hours later. Unfortunately, the fish was disqualified due to its stomach blowing out when they towed it in without tying the marlin's mouth shut. It was the first grander for Kona in 1999.

The Werner family was fishing on the 39-foot Rybovich charterboat SEA GENIE II with Capt. Gene Vander Hoek when they made their historic catch. They hooked the fish first thing in the morning and Tommy battled it for 45 minutes before deckhand Bronson Cablay secured the giant. This is the SEA GENIE II's third grander

This was a solo catch for Gilbert Hun with a fight time of 10 hours. About 8 hours into the fight, Victor Rapoza dropped off Bubba Kalama to help Gilbert handline the monster fish. They arrived at the dock around 10 p.m. and found the scale batteries were dead so this weight was reached using the commonly accepted method of calculating marlin weight.
