Jeff Van Hove and his friend Jeff O'Neill chartered the FIVE STAR for a half-day fishing trip on May 20, 2005. This was the angler's first deepsea fishing trip. The fish ate a purple Hardhead lure by Joe Palacat as they were trolling off the light at Makua. Capt. Carlton Taniyama and crewman Matt LoSasso intended to tag and release the fish, but it wasn't doing well after a 50-minute battle. It was a happy surprise when the fish weighed over 1,000 lbs as it looked thin from the bridge.
